    For small tasks like tire inflation or brad nailing, a 1–6 gallon tank is plenty. For continuous tools like sanders or paint sprayers, look for 20+ gallons to prevent the motor from running constantly.

    CFM stands for Cubic Feet per Minute, and it measures the actual volume of air the compressor can pump out. Horsepower just tells you how strong the motor is, but CFM tells you how much real work the machine can get done.

    Every air tool needs a specific amount of air volume to run properly. For example, a small inflation needle requires very little CFM, but a paint sprayer or sander needs a massive, continuous stream of air. When you are shopping for a compressor, always look at the CFM rating first to make sure it matches or exceeds the requirements of the tools you plan to use. If you only look at horsepower, you might end up with a loud, powerful motor that still cannot supply enough actual air to run your projects.

    You should drain your tank after every single use. When air is compressed, it naturally creates moisture that condenses and settles at the bottom of the tank. Leaving that water sitting inside can cause the tank to rust from the inside out, which ruins the compressor and creates a safety hazard. Just open the drain valve at the bottom of the tank when you are done for the day to let the water and pressure out.

    PSI stands for Pounds per Square Inch, which is the measure of air pressure inside the tank. A higher Max PSI gives you two major benefits for DIY projects.

    First, it allows you to run tools that require high pressure to operate correctly, such as heavy-duty framing nailers or impact wrenches. Second, a higher Max PSI means the compressor can pack a lot more air into a smaller tank. Think of it like tightly packing a suitcase. Because the air is compressed down so tightly, you get a longer run time before the tank empties and the motor has to kick back on to refill it.

    Air compressors require a massive burst of electrical current right when they start up to get the pump moving against the pressure already inside the tank. If your breaker keeps tripping, it is usually because the compressor is starving for power or sharing a circuit with too many other things.

    The most common culprit is using a standard, thin household extension cord. These cords cause a big drop in voltage, which makes the compressor pull even more amps to compensate, instantly tripping your breaker. To fix this, always plug the compressor directly into a wall outlet. If you must plug it in elsewhere, make sure it is on a dedicated 15 or 20 amp circuit with no other appliances, lights, or power tools running at the same time.
